About the Airline
Air Berlin was an airline company founded in Germany in 1980. It initially operated flights from Berlin and over time became the second largest airline in Germany. Air Berlin operated flights to many destinations, especially in Europe, North America and the Middle East.
The company's size, fleet and extensive flight network increased over time. In the 2010s, it tried to become more competitive by aiming to enter the low-cost transportation sector. However, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2017 due to financial difficulties, debts and increasing competition.
Following Air Berlin's bankruptcy, many of its routes and flights were transferred to other airlines. Prominent examples include Lufthansa taking over some of its flights and easyJet taking over some of its routes.
The significant events in Air Berlin's history and size were one of the turning points that affected the aviation sector in Germany. However, the company's bankruptcy was considered a great loss and was a difficult time for many employees.
Check-In Procedures
Airport Check-in:
If you haven’t checked in online or via mobile before going to the airport, you can check in at the Air Berlin counters at the airport. If you have luggage, this also includes baggage drop-off. It was generally recommended that you arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight to check-in.
Self Check-in Kiosks:
Air Berlin also offered self check-in kiosks at some major airports. These kiosks speed up the process by allowing passengers to pick up their boarding passes and baggage tags.
Baggage Drop-Off:
After check-in, if you have luggage, you will be directed to a designated baggage drop-off area where your luggage will be collected.
Baggage Rights and Pricing
Air Berlin applied different baggage allowances and pricing policies on the flights it offered until 2017. The company's baggage policy could vary depending on the flight class, route and ticket type. However, the basic rules that Air Berlin applied regarding baggage allowances and pricing are as follows:
Hand Baggage (Cabin Baggage):
Passengers were allowed to carry cabin baggage on Air Berlin flights. The dimensions and weight of the cabin baggage were generally as follows:
Standard Cabin Baggage Allowance: 1 piece, maximum dimensions 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm and weighing 8 kg.
Extra Cabin Baggage: If the passenger wanted to carry an additional cabin baggage, this was usually an additional fee service.
Important Note: The dimensions and weight of the cabin baggage were also strictly controlled at the security checks at the airport. If the baggage exceeded the specified limits, an additional fee could be charged.
Checked Baggage (Check-in Baggage):
Air Berlin gave passengers a certain amount of baggage allowance depending on the type of flight and the ticket class. The general baggage allowances were as follows:
Economy Class (Standard Ticket):
One piece of baggage allowance (up to 20 kg).
Economy Class (Flex or other flexible tickets):
One piece of baggage allowance (up to 23 kg) was usually offered.
Business Class Passengers:
Business class passengers were usually given two pieces of baggage allowance (up to 32 kg each).
Baggage Weight and Excess Baggage:
Excess Baggage Fees: If the baggage weight exceeded the limits stated above, additional fees were applied. These fees varied according to the amount of excess baggage and the flight route.
Baggage was generally accepted in 5 kg increments (e.g. 25 kg, 30 kg, 35 kg). The cost of each extra kilo could vary depending on the airline.
Special Items:
Some special items (such as baby strollers, sports equipment) could be carried without additional charges. However, the rules and charges for such special items could vary depending on the passenger class and flight policy.
Airline Ticket
Before going bankrupt, Berlin had a wide flight network and offered its passengers different categories of flight ticket options. Ticket prices usually varied depending on the route traveled, ticket type and flight class. However, we can summarize Air Berlin's flight ticket policies in general terms as follows:
Ticket Classes:
Air Berlin offered different ticket classes and pricing options. These ticket types usually varied according to the flight class and flexibility level:
Economy Class:
Standard Ticket: Basic economy tickets were usually the cheapest option, but the possibilities for making changes or cancellations were limited.
Flex Ticket: Offering more flexibility, these tickets allowed the flight date to be changed or cancelled. In addition, some extra services (such as more baggage allowance) could be included.
Business Class:
Business class tickets offered advantages such as wider seats, priority check-in, additional baggage allowance and more flexibility. These tickets were usually more expensive, but they were a suitable option for business travelers.
Pricing Policy:
Air Berlin's ticket prices generally varied depending on the following factors:
Travel Date: The earlier the flight date was purchased, the cheaper the ticket price. Last minute purchases could be more expensive.
By Route: Domestic flights were generally cheaper, while long-haul (international) flights were more expensive.
Flight Class and Flexibility: Flex tickets were generally more expensive because they offered greater flexibility. They were also higher for business travelers or premium class passengers.
Extra Services: Additional services such as extra luggage, seat selection, and meal options could increase the ticket price.
Food, Beverage, and Service
Before Air Berlin ceased operations in 2017, it offered a certain service of food and beverages during its flights. However, considering that the company has ceased operations, this service is no longer available.
Air Berlin flights usually offered snacks and hot and cold drinks for short-haul flights. On long-haul flights, there was a more extensive meal menu, and passengers were usually offered main courses, desserts, various drinks and snacks.
